I'd like to start by saying that it's impossible to list ALL the pros & cons of choosing the DIY route. Let's approach this topic from different angles.

Table of contents

1/You don't build your site for you. You build your site for your customer.

This is something that many new entrepreneurs and small business owners failed to understand. I made this mistake myself years ago. The decisions you make in your floral business should benefit your clients. You are supposed to serve and guide them. It's not the other way around.

Put yourself in their shoes, as often as you can and you'll certainly succeed.

I'm going to use my own experience to illustrate this point. I shared in my latest article that I was self-centered in my decision making process when I started ecom. It led me to unfulfillment, lack of purpose and everything felt forced. The minute I started thinking from my audience perspective, I felt more inspired and gained more traction.

If you have the skills to create a great website then DIY is the way. Don't waste your money hiring someone if you know how to do it.

Con of a Floral DIY Site

If you've never built a site before then ... avoid it. Your customer will be able to tell in just one glance that you don't have a professional website. Stay away from DIY if you care about your image.

2/You have time but no money.

This one is a huge dilemma for many florists. Which option is wiser? Building the site yourself or waiting till you have enough money to hire someone or buy a template? To be honest with you, I think we have to go with our gut here. If deep down you know that you desire to have a functional website but money is tight, then maybe, give it time. Save. You don't need to launch your site today or next month, unless your sales depend on it.

On the other hand, if you're willing to dive deep and do it yourself, then go on. I have a 3Days Floral Site Challenge to help you build your site on WIX. Sign up for FREE and you'll receive

the 3 Videos + a bonus about all the Floral Tips & Tricks on that platform.

You'll gain skills, and not just a random one. Web Design & Web Development are High Level skills. Building something with your hands is always rewarding. Be ready to spend hours though and be kind to yourself. Enjoy the learning experience.

Because it's your 1st time, the site may not turn out the way you originally thought. It may not look good but hey! You tried and that's a great accomplishment.

3/Is having a website a priority right now?

An other tricky convo. I'll release an article about this topic later this month.

All your actions as a business owner should follow a certain path. From getting a logo, setting up your social pages, taking photos of your products, you have to determine if you truly need a website right now. Your website should align with your goals. So what are your goals?

Me for example, I cannot operate without a website because I'm doing Web Design and I run a blog.

If you desire to sell online, you need an online floral shop. But if you d'rather sell on social media then a site is just an option.

If you have the time, the energy and the desire to learn, then try the DIY route. Improve along the way if having a website is a top priority.

Con of a Floral DIY Site

You'll eventually get the website but will it convert? It's like any type of DIY project, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

4/What's the long-term impact?

If you plan on selling flowers for a while or you're dreaming of running a successful wedding floral business long-term then be careful about your next moves. I'm pretty sure you want to be a florist for the next 5 years. So here's my question: What will your future self feel about your current choices?

You can start with a DIY site and hire a designer later when you're ready for the investment. You can also stick with your site for as long as you want. There's no rule. Really.

It's perfectly fine to start with a DIY site. Get familiar with the platform.

Con of a Floral DIY Site

DIY is a bad idea if you value your time, the deep sense of it. And what I mean by that is: time is money. Imagine spending hours building a site, not being fully satisfied with the result and having to hire someone to build an other one later?

Now, the choice is yours. I presented 4 different aspects you should take into consideration.

Don't get overwhelmed though! Take this quiz to know who should build your floral site.
